I am more worried about dry starts after that period of time, so I like to use Lucas fuel lubricant to (In my theory anyways, ) to reduce wear on start up, and try to use some kind of oil that really likes to stick around on parts internally so that after a long dry spell, on start up, their is at least some kind of protection in there from metal to metal contact. I like to think about Murphy's law, if it can go wrong it will, so that may be the gullible consumer route, but it seems to give me a peace of mind when going away for long periods of time. My hypothesis would be that if your back up check valve in your fuel pump is working correctly, then you will still have fuel in the pump and system, so a few months should not case any issues just like 1994 sport proclaims. So I can't really say with strong evidence one way or the other. You may not have to add any fuel stabilizer, but I have not done that much research on the subject and have no lab results to back it up.
It seems like the way things fail today, it's either there is not enough juice to start your car, but it can run a low draw item or many hours so it still has most of the capacity, or it has a high amount of Cranking amps, but it can't hold a charge for very long.Īs far as fuel stabilizer, one of the things that I have done is use Lucas fuel stabilizer/Lubricant so that my fuel pump does not become inoperative to whatever happens when fuel sits around for a long time, or really the lack of fuel, and therefor being exposed to air/water/gumming or sticking fuel pumps.įor the most part, you never know what condition your fuel or your pump is in. I imagine this would be pretty important in a snow mobile application where the temps outside are always going to be bellow 32F or have a chance of dipping below freezing. I am thinking that they are designed to work better in cold climates as such that the separators are made so that if the electrolyte freezes, there is little chance of damage or shorting out. Maybe its just me, but those small batteries seem to be made better then the standard run of the mill economic batteries. I have seen it happen, so I thought I would pass it on. And if an overcharge does happen, or the charger diodes fail, then you got AC in your system, and that is a BAD thing for you car electronics. It's just that I have seen way more charger failures then I would like to. So, yes you can use the stock 12v plug in your car. Going Wet cells gives me almost 5 years of life out of some cheap lawn mower batteries. The 24 Volt models seem to be prone to it. I stopped using SLA's for my Cheap UPS battery back ups since they tend to overcharge them. I just throw my car battery's on my UPS and it does the job wonderfully, but that is my solution. But at 40F, you are DC-ALL FINE for storage. Store it inside or a place where it NEVER reaches bellow 32F. If it was me, I would just take the battery out of the car if you are going to be gone that long. I have to away for like 6 months or more, so, regardless, the plates are going to spoil a bit and naturally loose some capacity. The problem is that the computer may control this, so it may just turn off one day depending on what model of car you have.
Many of those Solar Chargers do just that.
